In form three year-olds Denman and More Joyous joined some of the country's best thoroughbreds today as first acceptances were announced for the $1.5 million Group 1 Emirates Doncaster Mile (1600m) to be held on Saturday, April 17.
Three year-olds have a proud history in the Emirates Doncaster, winning 14 of the last 27 races, with Triple Honour the last to claim victory in 2008.
Rangirangdoo, Victorian flyer Typhoon Tracy and the Chris Waller trained Danleigh are also among the seventy-four first acceptances for the time honoured Group One classic over the famous Randwick mile.
Last year's winner Vision And Power, Epsom winner Rock Kingdom and Melbourne Cup champion Shocking also remain in contention, in what is shaping up as blockbuster day of racing that will also feature the running of the Group 1 Australian Oaks for three year-old Fillies (2400m).
Nominations for the Group 1 $353,300 Australian Oaks (2400m) were also announced today with More Joyous also nominated for the prestigious Fillies race along with the Bart Cummings-trained 2009 VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume and Hurtle Myrtle who finished a close second in the Surround Stakes on Saturday.
A total of eighty-eight Fillies were nominated for the Australian Oaks, up from seventy-one nominated for last year's event.
Nominations for the Group 1 $425,000 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) to be held at Royal Randwick, on Saturday, April 24th were also announced today with 2009 Metropolitan winner Speed Gifted and yesterday's Adelaide Cup winner Capecover among fifty-nine nominated horses.
2008 winner No Wine No Song was also among those nominated for Sydney's premier staying race.
"You can't help but get excited about this year's Emirates Doncaster after today's announcement of first acceptances". AJC Acting CEO Darren Pearce said.
"Typhoon Tracy, Denman and More Joyous are all in top form but you can't dismiss some of the more experienced campaigners like Chipping Norton Stakes winner Theseo and last year's winner Vision and Power.
"Nominations for the Australian Oaks are well up on last year with all indications pointing to a blockbuster day of racing at Royal Randwick on April 17th."
