SYDNEY, Feb 9 AAP - What One More Grand lacks in size he makes up for with heart and ability.

That's the opinion of trainer Neville Layt who has the last-start winner right on his game ahead of his first stakes test in Saturday's Listed Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Randwick.

The colt made a good impression when winning by almost four lengths at Rosehill over 1100m early last month, defeating Rock My Heart and Much Much More.

Layt hasn't started the two-year-old since that win on January 2 but the son of boom first-season sire Snitzel geared up for his Canonbury tilt with an impressive 6-1/2-length barrier trial victory at Canberra last week.

The trainer believes One More Grand will be hard to beat again on Saturday and plans to return to Sydney for the Silver Slipper Stakes on February 27 before contesting the Black Opal Stakes at Canberra on March 7.

Layt won the Black Opal with Sarthemare two years ago.

One More Grand trialled on a slow (6) at Canberra on February 5, running 53.55 seconds for the 900m hitout with a final 600m in 34.58s.

"It won't worry me if it rains (on Saturday), I know he can handle it and I know he can handle good tracks too," Layt said.

"He's an exciting little horse, so much like his father, he's got everything going for him.

"He's not a giant but he's well put together. And what he lacks in size he makes up for in ability."

The Queanbeyan-based trainer was unable to be at Rosehill when One More Grand scooted around the circuit to score last start.

He was at home recovering from back surgery and watched the race on television from his couch.

"I'll tell you what, it was the best way to take the pain away you've ever seen," he said of watching his horse win so well.

"My impression watching the race was that coming to the turn I knew he (Tommy Berry) had a full horse under him, and I knew he would let down well like he did."

That win was One More Grand's second in three career starts.

His only defeat was on debut in a 1000m 2YO Open Hcp at Canberra where he finished fifth.

"He should be unbeaten, I take the rap myself for not trialling him closer to the race on debut," the trainer said.

One More Grand is not nominated for the Golden Slipper and Layt said he won't be tempted to pay a late entry fee even if the colt continues to win.
